小学生の時、友人がハンカチーフをプレゼントすることは「別れ」という意味があるんだよと教えてくれました。それから、友人や親にあげるプレゼントはハンカチーフだけはご法度と思っていました。そんな時、1年次の冬にその友人が転校することが決まりました。
一生の別れにしたくなかったから私は彼女にぬいぐるみを贈りました。彼女も私にプレゼントをくれました。それはハンカチーフでした。まさか、別れの意味を教えてくれた本人から贈られるとは考えてもみませんでした。涙が止まらなかったその時、ハンカチーフが「別れ」の時にプレゼントされる理由は「その涙を拭いてください」というメッセージを伝えるためかもしれないと思いました。

When I was in elementary school, my friend told me that to giving someone a handkerchief meant saying "Farewell". So I thought that giving a handkerchief to any of my friends or my parents was simply not done. During the winter of our first year, my friend had to move away.
I didn't want this to be our last farewell so I gave her a stuffed toy. But the present she gave me was a handkerchief. I never thought that she, the one who taught me giving a handkerchief meant "Farewell" would give one to me. As my tears started to flow, I realized that the reason a handkerchief is given when saying goodbye might be because it carries the message of "please wipe away your tears with this".
